I had the honor of being commissioned by the jazz legend Stanley Clarke for a recent album cover. They had an extremely tight turnaround time. I was given the raw photograph and proceeded to come up with a design in about 6 hours. I chose a base hue of yellow with its complementary color as contrast, since the album and the image exuded an upbeat vibe. It made sense to me to give the type a feel of upward mobility, so I had the top of the U extend off the canvas. Stanley chose this design from among a pool of multiple designers, and the record company asked for some retouching, which is included in this version. Ultimately the record company chose its mind last minute and made its own decision for the album cover.
